Kula For Karma Presents Free "Yoga For Veterans" at the Ridgewood YMCA
Yoga is an ancient practice now used by soldiers and athletes to enhance focus and flexibility - and is often used as a complement to medical treatment for those suffering with post-traumatic stress (PTS).
In this class, we will explore basic poses to strengthen and balance the body, therapeutic poses to restore the body, guided deep relaxation and visualization techniques to manage injuries and trauma, breathing techniques to calm and invigorate the body, manage mood, improve sleep patterns, reduce stress, and meditation to focus and discipline the mind.
No previous experience with yoga is necessary. Modifications of poses are taught for any participants with specific physical challenges.
This 6 week program will take place Tuesday evenings from 6:15-7:15pm beginnning May 7 at the Ridgewood YMCA (Y membership not required), 112 Oak Street, Ridgewood, NJ 07450, www.ridgewoodymca.org.
Please call or email in advance to reserve a place. For further info or to sign up, please contact Carol Livingstone at 201.444.5600 x330.

We recently received
the following letter:
"Hi Penny I hope all is well.
Yesterday your Kula volunteer Karen was able to provide a special
experience for one of our patients.
Michael is a 16 year old boy who is very resistant to being
supported by others. With some trepidation he agreed to Reiki
and it was a pivotal experience for him. He has been hospitalized
for nearly 3 months non stop and has been having pretty consistent
fevers for some time now. As Karen preformed the Reiki I was
able to see and feel a lightness come over him I haven’t seen
in some time. His eyes were closed and smiled. His dad was
also able to see this change in his son. It was very moving.
Also his fevers have abated.
He is very open to continuing to see Karen on Tuesdays. However,
this boy who never asks for support has asked if Karen could
come see him again this week.
I wanted to reach out to you first to ask if Kula would be
willing to send Karen for some additional sessions.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Elizabeth"

Lynda Ferrara on Serving Women in Recovery
Executive
Director of the Give Back Yoga Foundation,
Rob Schware talks with teacher Lynda Ferrara for The
Huffington Post Blog on how yoga can help women recovering
from addiction find peace, self-knowledge and change - and how sharing yoga
has become an integral part of her own recovery journey.
"What connects us and opens (my students) up is not the content of
the asana sequence, but my willingness to become vulnerable with them. They
know my story. I've shared my pain, my joy and my gratitude for recovery
with them. There is no judgment or expectation of them...I feel their energy,
open my heart, and magic happens. What seems like such a small offering means
so much to these women, and is so powerful to those who are ready to receive
it."

Newark's Integrity House
Newark Mayor Cory Booker and Kula for Karma Teens

Logan Sivakumar, of Franklin Lakes, NJ was one of our original
TeenKula teen volunteers. Logan is now at NYU studying business,
and Newark Mayor Cory Booker recently spoke to his class.
After the talk, Logan went up to Mayor Booker and asked if
he was familiar with
Kula for Karma --and was answered with a big bright
smile, "YES,
of course"
We are thrilled that Mr. Booker clearly has fond memories of
his participation in Global Mala in 2010 with Kula for Karma,
and have posted a picture of him at this event below (more
pictures of this event here.)

Kula
reaches out to Boulder Trauma and Addiction Therapists
Kula's Yoga For Trauma and Addiction Training was presented for Healthcare
Professionals at the Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Non-Violence Center
in Boulder, Colorado. The training consisted of discussion about why yoga works
for victims of trauma and recovering addcits, along with a gentle chair yoga
class. "We would stop during the class and experience how our body felt,
doing long stretches with consistent breathwork, stopping for short guided
meditations. I was so delighted with the feedback that I got from this training,"
said Nancy Candea, Kula's Training Director. Kula is looking forward to bring
this training to healthcare professionals in the NJ and NY area.
Boulder Yoga Teachers love Kula's Yoga for Trauma and Addiction Training
On February 18, 2012twelve yoga teachers met a Richard Freeman's yoga studio in Boulder, Colorado to participate in Kula's Yoga for Trauma and Addiction Training. As with all our trainings, we had teachers form a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of goals to use the information that that were learning. The group plans to continue their work, including working in the women's shelter women's transitional outreach center and at the Boulder County Jail.

Local book club gathering brings good karma to the community
Kula for Karma was recently featured on the NorthJersey.com
website:
The most recent gathering of a local book club was
not like any other in the past. As always, there was discussion
and camaraderie, but last month it also included acupuncture,
massage and yoga.
