Body Positive

Kula for Karma - Body Positive Yoga

Did you know almost 24 million people in the United States suffer from an Eating Disorder, and 50% of these people also have depression?

Negative body image is an epidemic in Western culture.  Prolonged negative body image increases the risk of developing an eating disorder.  Unfortunately, only 10% of people with an eating disorder receive treatment. Additionally, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate compared to any other mental illness.

Therapeutic yoga is an evidence-based approach to decrease the common symptoms associated with eating disorders. Research indicated yoga, as adjunctive therapy for people with eating disorders, decreases eating disorder symptoms, depressive symptoms, and anxiety symptoms.  Yoga and meditation play a crucial part in allowing participants to heal the relationship between their mind and body.

Kula’s Body Positive Yoga is for anyone, whether they have a diagnosable disorder or have negative feelings about the way they look.  Body Positive yoga focuses on self-confidence and healthy body image through breath-work, meditation and the physical practice of yoga.

Testimonials

"This [class] is an excellent means to address an issue that is so prevalent in our times.  Yoga has helped me in so many ways but especially by allowing me to love my body after so many years of self-loathing.  I will definitely recommend this class to my friends and family.”

"I went to a lovely free community class at Pandora Healing in Hawthorne this morning. It was a class that focused on positive body image. Having struggled with this my whole life, and have definitely come along way, the teacher Jen said something that really hit home for me. She said how our bodies were temporary like a car we are leasing, we have to take care of it, but the soul will get a new body in the next lifetime. I am feeling tremendous gratitude and beauty for the body that allows me to be at home in it while I am here on earth. Such a beautiful class and message. I highly recommend it Friday mornings at 9:30."
