Gwen McCarthy graduated from college in Arizona where she first became a teacher. She taught English to the children of migrant farm workers and later to college English students.
In 1988 Gwen moved to New Jersey with her husband and four children. At that time she became involved in local government and worked for the Borough of Allendale as their Municipal Clerk and Administrative Officer for many years. Still a teacher though, she also taught a government certification program for Rutgers University.
About twelve years ago one of her daughters suggested that she might like Yoga. Once she became a serious Yoga student her life began to go in a different direction. Knowing of her love for Yoga, one of the Councilwomen Gwen worked for in Allendale brought her an article about Kula for Karma and she knew right away that was exactly what she was looking for. One year ago when Gwen graduated from her Yoga teacher training program she began working with patients at Hackensack Hospital's John Theurer Cancer Center. In January a new Yoga program for Cancer patients started at Valley Hospital and she is teaching there also.
Gwen finds a lot of similarity between both groups of students. “They are committed to learning, to their health, and most especially to each other. The support that they offer each other isn't like anything I've ever experienced before. I've always loved being a teacher, but being a Yoga teacher for Kula for Karma is more meaningful and rewarding than any other I've had in a lifetime of teaching.”
