$5 Community Classes: Tula Yoga in Aberdeen, NJ offers weekly donation based classes as an opportunity to give back to their community, and for their new teachers to gain teaching experience. 100% of the weekly class proceeds will be donated back to Kula for Karma. “We are proud to be an affiliate studio with Kula for Karma. When Kula comes in to present to our trainees, it gives them an opportunity to see how many populations out there can benefit from yoga and how they can do their part in helping. Our students are so passionate about sharing what they have learned and want to give back. Kula is doing a great service by putting these programs together and finding the right teachers to volunteer. We are excited to help our trainees find their passion and play a small part in healing through the practice of Yoga.
Studio Owner Uses Yoga to Beat Cancer: Jerry LePore is the founder and owner of Powerflow Yoga and has devoted 25 years of his life to the healthcare industry. This year Jerry was one of four amazing men honored at our 2015 Annual Gala for his outstanding work with within the community and his courage. Powerflow Yoga provides health, wellness, and spirituality to over 10,000 yogis and Jerry understands the importance of his own personal practice. Jerry uses yoga to keep him strong physically and mentally as he faces an ongoing battle with Hairy Cell Leukemia, a treatable but incurable cancer of the blood. Jerry and his team at Powerflow hold weekly donation-based classes across their ten studios. Each studio chooses a cause within their community to donate the proceeds. Kula for Karma appreciates the dedication Jerry and Powerflow Yoga provides to their yogis and communities in New Jersey.
The importance of Seva in Teacher Training: Charlotte Stone is Kula for Karma’s Director of Integrative Therapeutics, and one of Kula’s most cherished volunteer instructors. As the owner of Stone Yoga in Teaneck, NJ, Charlotte integrates her work with Kula into her role as studio owner and director of her 200HR training.
"As the Director of the Stone Yoga teacher training program, and the Director of Integrative Yoga Therapeutics for Kula for Karma, I wear two hats. In the Stone Yoga Teacher Training, we emphasize the importance of seva -- sharing what we so love about yoga with others who may not have access to yoga and desperately need it. Kula helps make this possible by offering our trainees many opportunities to observe experienced yoga teachers in a range of settings, to assist in these classes, and to then step into the role of teacher.
Many of our graduates have taken on regular commitments in the hospital-based classes organized by Kula, and at our own center, where our graduates have taught kids yoga classes to the children from Children of Joy Pediatrics, which was housed at our Center for the past year. It is also a great privilege to offer therapeutic trainings to the certified yoga teachers from the Kula for Karma family. These trainings provide trained yoga teachers with the clinical understanding, adaptive yoga methodology, and experiential practicum to help them bring safe, therapeutically adapted yoga classes to target populations such as those with cardiac disease, cancer, back pain, movement disorders, and more.
Thanks to Kula for Karma's efforts, therapeutic yoga has gained a warm welcome in hospital-based settings -- and that's no small task! Kula has carefully built the groundwork for doctors, nurses, and therapists to embrace the benefits of therapeutic yoga and mindfulness-based programs for their patients, and to trust that we -- the volunteer teachers -- are trained to teach a clinically informed yoga that will keep their patients safe.
One of my greatest joys is to meet with the most talented yoga teachers from many different yoga traditions, and to share gentle yet powerful, adaptive yoga practices with these amazing yogis. I also love to step in to volunteer when the opportunity presents itself. Nothing is more gratifying than to hear a cardiac patient or cancer patient say, "Thank you so much for the class today; I really needed it. I feel so much better now." Our students have no idea that they give us so much more than we could ever give them! Geri and Penni open doors wherever they go. And they do so with love, dedication, and a fierce commitment that ignites the desire to serve in all those whose lives they touch. It is a true honor to be part of the exciting growth of our beloved Kula, and its wonderful Affiliate Program."
