Did you know that 30 million people in the United States suffer from clinically significant eating disorders? That number is staggering. Unfortunately, only 10% receive treatment, and as a result, eating disorders have the highest mortality rate compared to any other mental illness.
We’re working to change this by giving more people who are suffering from eating disorders access to yoga. Yoga has been proven to have positive effects on the process of healing the relationship between the body and mind, and decreases symptoms of depression and anxiety that often accompany disordered eating.
Right now, we offer a free body positive class at Pandora Healing Center in Hawthorne, New Jersey, every Friday at 9:30am. These classes are for everyone, whether or not you’re struggling with a diagnosed eating disorder. Here’s what one participant had to say about her transformative experience:
"I went to a lovely free community class at Pandora Healing in Hawthorne this morning. It was a class that focused on positive body image. Having struggled with this my whole life, and have definitely come along way, the teacher Jen said something that really hit home for me. She said how our bodies were temporary like a car we are leasing, we have to take care of it, but the soul will get a new body in the next lifetime. I am feeling tremendous gratitude and beauty for the body that allows me to be at home in it while I am here on earth. Such a beautiful class and message. I highly recommend it Friday mornings at 9:30."
We’re also hosting an Advanced Teacher Training at Powerflow Yoga Glen Rock on March 5th and 6th, focusing on disordered eating and negative body image. In this training, participants will learn more about why yoga is beneficial for eating disorders, how to use yoga to heal and not harm, and so much more.
