Advanced Teacher Training


Kula for Karma teachers are required to have a 200-hr yoga teacher certification. Additionally, teachers must attend advanced training for trauma and addiction, cardiac patients, cancer patients, and disordered eating. Scholarships are available, as needed, with recipients committing a minimum of 10 hours of service to Kula for Karma.

Practicuum includes:
Lesson plan development, mentoring, observing, & teaching
CEUs are available

Adult Oncology

Training Objectives

  • Understand cancer; what is it and how does it affect the mind and body?
  • Understand cancer diagnostics, procedures and risk-factors 
  • Prepare teachers to teach a gentle, clinically informed yoga class to those suffering from a range of cancer diagnoses

Requirements

  • Attendees must be 200 hour certified
  • Volunteer packet, proof of insurance, copy of 200-hour certification

Adult Cardiac

Training Objectives

Movement Disorders

Training Objectives

  • Understand Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease; what are they and how do they affect the mind and body?
  • Understand movement disorder diagnostics, procedures and risk-factors 
  • Prepare teachers to teach a gentle, clinically informed yoga class to those suffering from MS and Parkinson’s

Trauma, Addiction & Post-Traumatic Stress in Veterans

In this training, we explore:

  • The development and consequence of trauma-related disorders, and addiction

  • The psychotherapeutic treatment of trauma-related disorders and how yoga fits into an integrative treatment approach

  • The special considerations and cautions when providing yoga therapy for war veterans, active troops, addicts, victims of war crimes, sex trafficking, incarcerated youths, and adults, at-risk children and teens

  • Specific practices and protocols found to be helpful for trauma-affected individuals, including a detailed treatment manual

Eating Disorders & Negative Body Image

In this training we explore:

  • Why Yoga is Beneficial for Eating Disorders and Negative Body Image

  • How to use yoga to heal and not harm

  • Connecting the 8 Limbs of Yoga and the Chakras to body image

  • Essential concepts including: Cognitive Shifting, Body Shaming & Mindfulness

  • How to incorporate Pranayama, Asana, & Meditation

Addiction

In this training, we explore:

  • The practice of working with underserved populations who deal with addiction issues and understand how yoga helps heal and can be used as a tool to develop impulse control
  • Integrating NBT into a yoga class and creating meditations that reinforce positive messaging
  • The psychotherapeutic treatment of trauma related disorders and how yoga fits into an integrative treatment approach
  • The science behind the effects of yoga on the nervous system
  • The special skills needed when teaching in rehab centers working with Adult and Adolescent Substance abusers.
  • How yoga empowers individuals to live with more personal awareness of internal peacefulness.
  • Specific practices designed to be helpful for trauma-affected individuals, including a detailed treatment manual
  • How to prepare and deliver effective lesson plans using asana, breath work and meditation techniques to meet the needs of clients who have experienced trauma and addiction

Mental Health

In this training, we explore:

Class 1:

  • Understanding neurocognitive behavioral function and its relationship to mental health 
  • Description of the Limbic System, Autonomic Nervous System, and Neurotransmitters as structures and components essential to emotion and mental health
  • Adolescent Mental Health
    • Description of common mental health issues in adolescents and the etiology
    • Awareness of developmental milestones in adolescent population and how these affect physical, cognitive, and emotional wellbeing.
    • Understanding the changing brain in this population and how that impacts impulsivity and mood management. Specifically, the impact of changes in the frontal lobes and emotional receptivity in the brain will be discussed.

Class 2:

  • Adult Mental Health
    • Discussion of adult mental health issues and how pathology can begin in adolescence and continue into adulthood or emerge in later life.

Class 3:

Integrating therapeutic yoga, breath work, and meditation into treatment plans for mental health

Class 4:

  • Presenting evidence-based case studies reflecting the positive impact of yoga for adolescents and adults with mental health issues
  • Creating therapeutic yoga lesson plans for adolescents and adults

Manual and current research will be provided

Homework is required to obtain certification

Must attend at least 3 of the live sessions
